Nature’s textures, patterns and colors inspire these same elements in my mixed media work. I regularly explore and seek out experiences in the natural environment, which provide the space for contemplation, and in large part, the subject matter for my creative work.
Working mostly in woodcutting and painting, I employ the time-honored method of transferring my woodcuts by hand onto Japanese rice paper. I am drawn to the organic qualities inherent in the wood and paper materials, as well as to the textures afforded by applying oil-based pigments and other media to a variety of paper surfaces.
In addition to using forms from nature in my work as a basis for reflecting on the effects of time, place and the human condition (nature being symbolic of human experience), I also look to medieval manuscripts for inspiration (the ideas behind them, their content, personalization, illustration and illumination), as well as to techniques and traditions of early book arts. My creative expressions are generally organized in series and united by a common border or theme.
