Woodcut Borders with Mixed Media
These works combine woodcut borders with the techniques of stencil, drawing (color pencil), painting (gouache and oil), and calligraphy (ink). The works are inspired on a number of levels by early book forms--from medieval manusripts to early printed books. The border motifs are drawn from ornamental elements studied among Celtic, Armenian and French manuscript and early book examples, as well as my own fanciful inventions. The pages employ text, illustration and illumination as early manuscripts and books typically would, employing both painted and printed aspects. The pages serve to celebrate and record culturally-based wisdoms rooted in the natural world. They also explore the dynamic between the spoken and the recorded in passing down cultural values, as well as humanity's connection to the natural world.
