The Moon, The Sky, The Signs that Guide
Mixed Media Woodcut and Painting on Japanese Rice Paper
Image Area: 9 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches
Framed: 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches
Just as it has for my Ukrainian forebears and storytellers, the moon in all of its wondrous glory has forever captured my gaze, my imagination, and my interest.
The Moon, The Sky, The Signs that Guide is a body of work created as a celebration of the moon. It brings together a point in time in my observations of this natural phenomenon in the night sky, as well as a recognition of the many magical embodiments and interpretations of the moon which have proliferated in Ukrainian culture and fueled my inspiration.
This body of work builds on the ideas and themes explored in my earlier work. Several new directions at this time include: (1) exploring notions of human interaction with the landscape and other elements of nature, such as the moon and the sky, which can inspire, heed and guide; and, (2) a re-envisioning of the woodcut border, from one inspired by medieval scrolls, columns, bird forms, and leafwork, to one inspired by symbolic forms from nature, in particular those one might find on an old map—literally to guide and to give direction to those interacting with the landscape.
As such, animal tracks, paths marked by arrow forms, and a distinct crescent moon and tree shapes represent the natural markers on a moonlit journey -- either a distinct path or a new direction. Conceived as bookplates, a sequence or story unfolds celebrating the magical aspects of the moon, enhanced through illustration techniques and illumination like an old illustrated book page. Greater clarity is suggested as the moon’s position changes in the sky, growing larger and illuminating the sky.
